Access and trunk ports

Access and trunk ports

If you consider to use VLANs in your network, then you will need to configure some port on switch as access port and trunk ports. Below is a description each ports type:

·         Access port – A port that can be assigned to single VLANs. This type of ports is configured on switch ports that are responsible for connecting to end devices such as computer, printers etc.

·         Trunk port – A port which is connected to another switch port. This type of ports can carry traffic of multi VLANs, so this enabled you to extend VLANs across your all network. And frames are tagged by assign VLAN ID to each frames as they traverse between switch.

The below example illustrate the difference:-

In the above network example, the switch port connected to computers would be configured as access port. The port that connect switch together would be configured as trunk port.
